A well-preserved medieval fort in Kerala’s northern district of Kasaragod, it is also the largest, sprawling over 40 acres. Almost three-quarters of its exterior is water-bound. Bekal fort in Pallikkara village has been declared as a special tourism spot by the government of India since 1992. This lofty, keyhole-structured fort overlooking the Arabian sea is 130 ft above sea level and was built with amazing technology to defend itself against the attack of enemies from the sea. It lies on a steep hill and is built of laterite. The walkway to the top and the zigzag entrance is beautiful.
The observation tower provides a beautiful view of the sea. The sunset here is breathtaking. The fort is steeped in history and therefore a real treat for history lovers as it was a stronghold of many kingdoms.The Bekal beach and park nearby is a sandy retreat which attracts visitors with its light waves, making it ideal for swimming. There are police and guards to help visitors. The park has a beautiful walkway which overlooks the fort and the sea. Horse rides, camel rides and local snacks make the park ideal as a family picnic spot. Kids have many options for entertainment here.
